How and Why Nutrient Deficiencies Become Disease

1. Eating the Standard American Diet (SAD)

Fast foods, cooked & highly processed & refined foods, chemicals (artificial colors, sweeteners, flavorings), high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, & unhealthy oils; Low in fiber and nutrition, leads to:

Measurable Nutritional Deficiencies:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Enzymes
  • Amino acids
  • Essential Fatty Acids

2. Measurable Nutritional Deficiencies

If present in the body long enough, leads to:

Measurable Body Chemistry Imbalances, for example:

  • pH (acid/base)
  • Blood sugar
  • Hormones
  • Digestive (Enzyme deficiency)

3. Body Chemistry Imbalances & Resulting Symptoms

If present in the body long enough, leads to:

Symptoms of Dis-Ease & Eventual Disease (Related to Chemistry Imbalances):

  • Acid pH = Inflammation, DJD, Arthritis
  • Blood Sugar = Hypoglycemia & Fatigue
  • Hormones = PMS, Acne
  • Digestive = Indigestion (heartburn) or Incomplete Digestion

Summary: Deficiency to Disease

  • Dietary Deficiency 15%
  • Nutritional Deficiency 30%
  • Body Chemistry Imbalance 45%
  • Organ/Gland Dysfunction 60%
  • Symptoms of Dis-Ease 80%
  • Diagnosis of Disease 100%

The numbers 15% - 100% are arbitrary. The point is to show that symptoms don’t usually show up until ~80% of the process has occurred.  This illustrates why you should not use symptoms as a gauge of your health. Approximately one-fourth of all heart attacks are ‘silent’, without chest pain symptoms. The first and only symptom is death.

The Health Enhancement Center – Clinical Background & Services:

Since 1990, Maile Pouls, Ph.D., has provided long-distance individualized nutritional programs to thousands of Americans to support their body's natural healing abilities. Maile’s specialty is determining the relationship between underlying nutritional deficiencies and body chemistry imbalances and resulting health conditions.

Using in-depth health history and diet history questionnaires and various laboratory studies, Maile is able to determine if nutritional deficiencies (or excesses) and other stress factors related to body chemistry imbalances are contributing to the person's health conditions and special needs. Each person is then placed on a customized protocol of therapeutic nutritional supplements and diet to correct these deficiencies, imbalances and toxicities. Complete, written instructions and product information is provided.

I tell every client, "I don't treat symptoms or treat disease states, I look for underlying chemistry imbalances or nutritional deficiencies, the actual cause of so many conditions, symptoms, and diagnosed disease states." It can take years for chronic chemistry imbalances to manifest as symptoms of disease, and yet it can take as little as three to six months on a specific nutritional program to bring the chemistry back into normal ranges. My programs address underlying nutritional and chemical causes. When these causes are removed, the body, in most cases, knows how to heal.

Services include (but are not limited to) analysis and recommendations for chemistry balancing, digestive enzyme therapy, diet and nutritional planning; cellular, liver and colon detoxification, digestive problems, degenerative joint conditions, stress and anxiety-related conditions, sleep disorders, mood disorders, depression, allergies, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, candida therapies, athletic nutrition, weight and obesity management, and hormone balancing.

Pediatric services include (but are not limited to) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), learning disorders, behavioral disorders, and diet and lifestyle modifications.

Maile Pouls, Ph.D., and her husband, Gregory Pouls, D.C., F.I.C.N., have co-authored numerous books and articles on nutrition and their practice has been featured in numerous books, publications, and support group websites.
