Nutrition vs. Rx Drug – The Politics of Medicine

Nutrition vs. Rx Drugs – The Politics of Medicine

Gregory Pouls, D.C., F.I.C.N.

“Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize into an undercover dictatorship to restrict the art of healing to one class of men and deny equal privileges to others; the Constitution of the Republic should make a special privilege for medical freedoms as well as religious freedom.” -- Attributed to Dr. Benjamin Rush, M.D., a signer of the Declaration of Independence

Is it possible that Dr. Rush's statement regarding an 'undercover dictatorship' is true and permeates all areas of medicine in America today?

If true, numerous entities are enjoying profits from the existing trillion-dollar medical system, while the end-user, or receivers of modern medicine, are not usually being offered what they want: to learn how to ‘get well and stay well’. Americans want real disease prevention, wellness education programs and therapies that can actually address the common underlying contributing factors to many health conditions.

“In America today, health care is not primarily about health, it is about money and politics.” Stephen Sinatra, M.D.

A few years back I had the opportunity to ask the president of a major American insurance company, “Why does your company continue to reimburse your provider doctors to manage their patient’s symptoms and health conditions with chemical drugs when safer, less-toxic, preventive (nutritional) therapies are available that will address underlying causes and promote lasting wellness?” His answer: “Well, doctor, I hear what you are saying, however, the wheels of change turn very slowly.”

“Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened.” Winston Churchill

Yes, in America health care the ‘wheels of change’ not only turn slowly, they appear to be stuck at a crossroads. While numerous entities enjoy the profits from the delivery of products and services into the trillion-dollar medical industry, the end-users are offered a system of medicine that can manage their disease but can never really get them well. Doctors and health providers across America are hearing this from their patients: (have you thought or said these things?)

  • “The cost of my health insurance and prescription medicines continue to rise”
  • “I’m sick and tired of being offered only drugs and or surgery by my doctor.”
  • “I don’t want to take drugs the rest of my life.”
  • “Isn’t there a safer, more natural way I can address and actually overcome my health condition?”

The resistance to change in American medicine is great,

however, the need for a change is greater.

Many of the drug treatments being delivered today are continued simply because these drugs were learned by doctors in medical school, during their internship, in private practice, or were recommended to them by a pharmaceutical company representative. This is the way ‘it has always been done’. Corporate lobbying and government protectionism, medical board regulations, interdisciplinary biases, and numerous entities placing profits and control of their markets above doing what is actually best for the end-users all contribute to the resistance for change in American medicine.

In America today, we have an over-abundance of unhealthy foods, unhealthy lifestyles, toxic environments, and prescription medicines used to treat the symptoms of most health conditions and diseases.  Americans are receiving more diagnostic testing, more medical services and treatment, and more prescription medications than ever before. Yet, more people are being diagnosed with medical conditions than ever before in the history of America.

The superiority of American health care is a myth.

The US is presently ranked #37 in comparison to other countries in terms of healthcare systems and their efficiency (infant mortality, etc.), behind virtually every EU country and Canada. So, don’t pretend that we are so superior to everyone else. We are not. For the U.S. to be 37th in the world is shameful given the resources that we have.

What is the end result of eating, living, and receiving medical care the “American way”?

The combination of a poor diet, high stress, unhealthy lifestyles and environments, 'disease management' medical treatments and over-medication have resulted in an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol, stroke, hypertension, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, some cancers, psychological disorders, and increased surgical risk.

Something is very wrong with this picture.

  • Medicine is supposed to help people get well and stay well.
  • Shouldn’t medicine be something more than managing disease?
  • Shouldn’t the goal be true disease prevention and health management?
  • Shouldn’t medicine promote wellness education in the forms of general health, diet & nutrition, lifestyle and exercise?

“Today, more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of physical exercise.”  ~Mike Adams
